Gboard tests clipboard suggestions to make it easier to copy and paste

Earlier this year in January, we discovered evidence of a new feature in a teardown of Gboard version 9.0.2 that would allow users to easily copy images from Google Chrome to their clipboard and paste them in supported messaging apps. While the Chrome flag to enable the feature was already enabled at the time, Google hadn’t rolled it out to the Gboard app. Even though Google is yet to enable the feature in the Gboard app, the company is now testing another new clipboard feature that will make it easier for users to copy and paste text using the keyboard.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, recently received the new feature on his OPPO Find X2 Pro and, as you can see in the screenshots below, it brings up a new clipboard suggestion row in Gboard whenever you copy something to the clipboard. When using the feature for the first time, Gboard displays a couple of tips to help you get started and the copied text appears in the shortcuts bar right above the keyboard, where you’d usually find shortcut buttons for features like stickers, GIF search, settings, and the full clipboard manager. Tapping on the suggestion automatically pastes the text in whatever app you’re currently using.

Our friends over at 9to5Google have also spotted the clipboard suggestions feature on one of their devices and they further highlight that the feature also works with password fields. However, unlike regular text, Gboard replaces copied passwords with dots in the suggestions bar in order to prevent other users from seeing your password. As of now, the feature is only available for a handful of users in the latest Gboard beta release (v9.3.8.306379758-beta) and it was enabled by a server-side update. We currently have no information on the release timeline on the stable channel, but we’ll update this post as soon as the feature starts rolling out to a broader audience.
